TITLE: Client Service Advocate 

SUPERVISOR: Shelter Manager

LOCATION: Bismarck, ND

HOURS: Monday – Sunday Shift Rotation

Shifts: 7:00 am – 3:00 pm & 2:30pm – 10:30pm

STATUS: Full-time & Part-time, non-exempt


Position Summary:

United Way seeks a professional, compassionate, and dynamic Client Service Advocate. Under the direction of the Shelter Manager, the Client Service Advocate is responsible for the day-to-day upkeep and operations of the emergency shelter program for homeless individuals and families. The Client Service Advocate works regularly with both clients and volunteers, and is responsible for the delivery of high quality services that restores dignity and helps homeless people return to permanent housing.

Position Duties:

  • Provide intake and orientation
  • Provide advocacy services
    • Make referrals and coordinate services with community providers
    • Link clients with services or assist in ordering birth certificates and identification cards
    • Conduct assessment and develop service plan
    • Communication with probation and courts as required
  • Administration: Ensure the delivery of services in a professional, ethical and effective manner; ensure cleanliness and maintenance of a clean, safe, and supportive environment for clients and staff. Oversee client chores and volunteer meals. Process client belongings. Organize and distribute donations. Understand and implement all United Way policies and procedures.
  • Community Relations: Develop and maintain strong relationships with area service providers, businesses, and community groups. Collaborate with community groups to provide optimal services to clients.
  • Record Keeping: Nightly documentation of case notes and shift report. Data collection, compilation, and submission of all program statistics. Submit monthly, quarterly, and annual reports to Administration.


  • Must have high level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. Position continually requires demonstrated poise, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Must be able to interact and communicate with compassion with individuals at all levels.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs including Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with others; prepare clear and accurate reports, make effective oral presentations to groups in a public forum; work independently under minimum supervision.
  • Two year associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree in social work preferred; one or more years of experience or training in a homeless shelter, counseling or social work.
