PCs for People

In today’s digitally-driven world, our dependence on regular computer access is ever-increasing. Job seekers depend on it, students are at a disadvantage without it, even social lives can suffer as common communication practices shift to web-based platformLIVEUNITED_monitors.

For families struggling with poverty, computers often become an unnecessary luxury – when compared to food, heat and housing. While basic necessities should take precedence, these families are at a serious disadvantage without regular internet access. At-home internet and computer access is directly related to income. According to the Pew Research Center about 30 percent of Americans do not have access to broadband internet in their home. For low-income families, this figure rises to nearly 60 percent. While basic necessities should take precedence, these families are at a serious disadvantage without regular internet access.

PCs for People’s mobile refurbishing team traveled to Bismarck-Mandan April 21 – 26 and partnered with MSA United Way, to collect, refurbished and distribute roughly 200 computers to local families.

A big thanks to all the businesses and individuals who donated computers, the volunteers who helped with distribution, Girl Scouts for lending their facility and PCs for People for providing this valuable service to our community!
