Emergency Homeless Shelter

Emergency Homeless Shelter

Please help the homeless crisis today!

This summer, a longtime homeless provider announced that they were closing our Men’s Emergency Shelter on November 1st. Aside from

AARC's Domestic Violence Shelter and Youthworks Homeless Shelter for Runaway and Homeless youth, the Men's Emergency Shelter was the only emergency shelter in Bismarck-Mandan.

The homeless coalitions wanted to lead the charge in identifying a plan for the winter months. United Way doesn't duplicate efforts, so we supported the coalitions. However, when a plan wasn't submitted by Oct 26, the last night of shelter, United Way stepped up to make sure no one was sleeping out in the cold.
We initially agreed to help through the month of November. On Thursday, November 30, the state coalition asked that United Way take the lead for the entire winter. We said yes to this call to action.

We've been working very closely with City Commissioner Nancy Guy, our nonprofit partners, Sanford hospital and concerned community members, who have stepped up to help with nightly intakes at 4:30pm for people in crisis.

With Nancy Guy's help, United Way has explored over 20 potential locations to operate a shelter through April 2018. We will be developing policies and procedures, hiring on staff, and fundraising for the winter crisis.

We have sheltered 134 homeless men, women and children and have provided 576 nights of shelter from Oct 27 through the end of November.

A big thank you goes to AARC, Northland’s Rescue Mission in Grand Forks and Youthworks, who are the local experts in the field helping by sharing their past grant applications, assisting in the supervision of intakes, and being a resource for best practices.

Funds are needed to provide food, shelter and supportive services to provide a path out of homelessness.

Donations of socks, winter hats, gloves, personal hygiene products and meals are accepted at United Way. Volunteers are needed to assist at the United Way office or to assist clients with nightly intakes.
